I love what I do- to be blessed enough to spend my days (and nights) surrounded by and thinking of great cars is one thing. But to be able to share the joy of a very special car with a friend is even better. As reported earlier on this site, a very good friend and client engaged me to inspect some prospects for his impressive collection at the RM Auctions Paris sale in February 2014.
His is a varied collection with European & American cars from late-thirties to the eighties- we joke about ‘focus’ all the time- but the one thing all his cars share is great style. He has an impeccable eye and great taste. An Alfa guy to the core, we settled on the 1947 Alfa Romeo 6C2500 Sport Cabriolet RM was offering. This Pinin Farina masterpiece was restored by one of the leading shops in the world, Quality Cars in Padova, Italy. It is simply stunning, with elegant detailing everywhere you look.
But what is truly the best about this car is that the restoration goes as well as it looks. The owner travels a great deal and hadn’t spent enough time in the desert where the car lives to have taken it out. I had it serviced last week and this morning we met for an early drive. I took him out to familiarize him with the controls and the operation, then he took the wheel for the first time. The smile on his face was wonderful, a complete testament to the match of man and car.
Driving the car at some speed on the open roads, it was easy to imagine the car itself recalling the exciting days of 1949, when it left everyday duties for a bit and was extensively campaigned in events across Italy, including the legendary Mille Miglia. Who knows, it may find it’s way back there before long…
