Donald will host two must-see presentations on February 17th and 19th on modern style and consumerism at Palm Springs Modernism Week.
Tickets are still available to attend
15 February, 2018 – The Jet Set seem to always be in fashion and in Donald Osborne’s case, this is true. Donald flies frequently back and forth between the U.S. and Europe, and makes it look so easy in his signature bow-tie and immaculate wardrobe, all the while appraising car collections and managing significant restorations for clients, attending auctions, and hosting leading concours d’elegance.
Most of us have come to know and love Donald seeing him every week on‘Jay Leno’s Garage,’ CNBC’s weekly primetime show, for which Donald imparts his knowledge on classic car values. What many don’t know is that he is also an historian and specialist of the modern era, having passionately studied everything from art and cars to music and consumer behavior shared between the United States and Europe. Some of this knowledge was shared in his acclaimed book, ‘Stile Transatlantico / Transatlantic Style- A Romance of Fins and Chrome,’ but there is so much more to tell and that is why he has chosen to participate in Palm Springs Modernism Week on February 17 discussing a wider scope of modern style. In “Donald Osborne on the Look of Things: Selling Design to the Masses in the ‘50s,” fellow modernists and culture vultures have the opportunity to learn about the evolution of mid-century consumerism in the years following the War into what we know today across all categories of shopping: everyday household products, furniture, automobiles and interiors.
As printed on the event’s web site: ‘Based on a ground-breaking booklet published by General Motors Public Relations in 1955, Donald’s presentation expands the view to include designers, companies and products from across America and Europe. The role of technology and the development of new “space age” materials in styling and design will also be explored and how they inspired designers and impacted the products consumers brought into their garages and homes.’
Then, on February 19th in partnership with Alfa Romeo for Modernism Week, Donald will host a presentation and book signing for his book ‘Stile Transatlantico / Transatlantic Style- A Romance of Fins and Chrome.’ A classic example of the cross-continental pollination addressed in the book is his very own 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 Super, which will be included as part of Desert Alfa Romeo’s display at the Palm Springs Convention Center throughout the duration of the event. Those who connect with Donald on social media already know the story behind this car from previous posts.
If you can’t make it to Palm Springs but wish to cross paths, Donald will be traveling all over the world this year participating in a myriad of fantastic events. Follow along or register yourself to join in the fun!
